What should someone look for when buying artwork? Your top tips please!

Our top tip may be a little cliche, but first and foremost go with what you love. We’re big believers in just knowing if it feels right with a vintage piece. You should always trust your gut! If we were to speak from a more practical perspective, for vintage and antique works we would advise having a good look at the condition report (make sure there is one!), and really consider its purpose. Where do you want it to hang? Is it to be a statement piece or part of a gallery wall? There’s a lot to think about but it’s well worth being methodical in your approach to growing your collection.

What should someone look to avoid when shopping for artwork?

Things that are not unique! There’s such a beauty in owning a piece that no one else will have in their home. As well as being great conversation starters, the original pieces that you collect along the way are what’s going to make your interiors distinctive. This also doesn’t have to break the bank! Once you start digging around for original pieces you’ll be fascinated by the amount of affordable artworks that pop up.

What are the current trends that you are seeing in the market?

Mid century oils are really in right now. The warm tones and muted styles of mid century pieces are super complimentary in the modern home and we’re seeing so many of our customers fall in love with stylish oil on boards. Particularly Swedish School ones! Another trend that we’re seeing is a craze for eclectic Folk pieces. Some very sweet cattle portraits and naive landscapes have been flying out of the studio as soon as they hit the website. It’s definitely one of the more niche trends, but they’re looking so lovely in our client’s homes!

What is your favourite piece of artwork that you own and why?

This is a question that tends to split the studio team completely. But one painting that we all seem to swoon over is a mid century oil by an artist called Margaret Graeme Niven. Titled ‘Trinkets’, this piece is so finely executed. The great lighting, subtle reflections and interesting objects have made it a real talking point in the studio. I can’t believe that none of us have taken it home ourselves yet.

Most unexpected place you have found a lovely piece of artwork?

We have hundreds of artworks arriving in the studio each week for us to restore, research and frame before going online. Sometimes we find works on paper in mixed lots from auctions that simply need a little bit of tlc and a frame to become wonderful artworks in their own right. The bottom of a cardboard box isn’t always where you’d expect to find a lovely piece of art, but at Sulis this happens more often than not!
